Tata Motors Breaks Ground on ₹9,000-Crore Tamil Nadu Plant to Manufacture JLR Cars
CHENNAI: Tata Motors is set to establish a new milestone with the groundbreaking of its ₹9,000-crore state-of-the-art production facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet district. Six months after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government, Chief Minister M K Stalin laid the foundation stone for the facility on Saturday. The plant will focus on manufacturing next-generation vehicles for Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), catering to both domestic and international markets.
This new facility, which meets international standards, is designed to produce over 2,50,000 vehicles annually. Production will begin in phases, gradually ramping up to full capacity over the next 5-7 years. The plant will manufacture vehicles for three major brands: Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors, and Tata Electric Vehicles (EV).
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Stalin thanked Tata Motors for selecting Ranipet as the site for this major project, which is expected to create 5,000 jobs. He urged Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to expedite the construction work and take part in the plant’s inauguration upon completion.
Stalin highlighted the swift progress of the project, noting that the foundation stone was laid just six months after the signing of the MoU in March. “This exemplifies the Dravidian model government’s dedication to the growth of Tamil Nadu and the empowerment of its youth,” he said. He also called on Tata Motors to continue investing in the state, emphasizing the shared responsibility for its growth, remarking, “This is not just my state or yours; it is our state.”
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We are excited to make Panapakkam the home for our next-gen vehicles, including electric and luxury cars.” He further highlighted the success of various Tata Group companies already operating in Tamil Nadu.
The ceremony was attended by key officials, including Ministers T R B Rajaa, Duraimurugan, and R Gandhi, along with Chief Secretary N Muruganandam, Industries Secretary Arun Roy, and Ranipet Collector J U Chandrakala.
