Centre Approves ₹27,522 Crore Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway Passing Through 8 Bihar Districts

In a transformative development for Bihar’s road infrastructure, the Centre has granted approval for the alignment of two major highway projects — the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway and the four-laning of the Mashrakh–Chakia–Bhittha Mod stretch along the vital Ram Janaki Marg. These landmark infrastructure initiatives are expected to significantly enhance connectivity across north Bihar, drastically cut down travel times, and boost regional economic activity, particularly in agrarian and border districts.

The Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway, a high-speed six-lane corridor with a proposed length of 525.6 km, has received the green light from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Of this, a substantial 417 km will traverse through Bihar, at an estimated project cost of ₹27,522 crore. Designed for vehicles to cruise at a top speed of 120 kmph, this expressway is poised to redefine road travel in the region. The route will pass through eight key districts — West Champaran, East Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj — bringing unparalleled connectivity and opening up new avenues for trade, commerce, and tourism.

A striking feature of this mega project is the land use pattern, with approximately 87.5% of the land to be acquired being agricultural. This highlights the predominantly rural and farming landscape of the region, and the expressway is expected to revolutionize agricultural logistics by enabling faster movement of produce to larger markets. The expressway will also include robust infrastructure components such as 42 major bridges and 151 minor bridges, ensuring seamless travel and durability.

In parallel, the Centre has also cleared the alignment for the four-laning of the 42 km Mashrakh–Chakia–Bhittha Mod stretch along the Ram Janaki Marg, an important regional road that leads to the India–Nepal border. This widening is part of a broader 108 km greenfield road project, aimed at strengthening border connectivity and enhancing regional access. The project will incorporate bypasses at Dumrasan, Kesaria, Chakia, Madhuban, Naya Gaon, Sheohar, Bathnaha, Kumhan, and Sursand, effectively streamlining traffic and reducing congestion in densely populated areas.

The significance of these infrastructure developments was underlined by Bihar’s Road Construction Minister Nitin Nabin, who extended his gratitude to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. He emphasized that these projects are vital for the state’s development strategy. According to Nabin, once the roads are operational, residents from various parts of Bihar will be able to reach Patna within just three hours, a massive improvement from current travel durations. He also highlighted the projects’ potential to catalyze economic activity in north Bihar, especially in the agriculturally rich and strategically important border districts.

These roadways are more than just transportation links; they are engines of socio-economic transformation. With faster connectivity, better trade routes, and improved accessibility to state capital Patna and international border zones, Bihar is poised to enter a new era of development. The projects are aligned with the Centre’s vision of inclusive growth and regional upliftment through world-class infrastructure.
